Menendez Brothers May Be Freed From Jail

  • by

Lyle and Erik Menendez, who attended Calabasas High School in the early 1980’s, are currently serving life sentences for the murders of their parents. An effort is currently underway from relatives of the two, as well as celebrity supporters including Kim Kardashian and Rosie O’Donnell, to free the brothers based on new evidence. The brothers were initially sentenced when prosecutors alleged they killed their wealthy parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, for financial gain. The defense argued that the brothers acted in self defense after years of sexual abuse by their father. New evidence supporting the abuse claims has surfaced, including allegations from a member of the boy band Menudo who said he was molested by Jose Menendez, and a letter Erik wrote to his cousin about the abuse before the murders. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon could ask for resentencing based on factors including time served and rehabilitation. If he recommends resentencing the pair go before a judge who will decide if the  brothers will be released, receive a lesser sentence or get a new trial.
