Butterfly Garden Opens in Calabasas

Butterfly Garden Opens in Calabasas

Las Virgenes Municipal Water District celebrated the opening of their new Butterfly Garden at the Bark Park in Calabasas.

The garden is filled with sustainable plants and flowers that will attract butterflies. It was designed with biodiversity to bring both butterflies and inspiration to visitors.

Craig Jones, LVMWD Resource and Conservation Manager, spoke about the partnership between the water district, the City of Calabasas, the community and the Santa Monica Mountains Fund in bringing the garden to fruition. He gave a shout out to Agoura Mayor Jeremy Wolf, who was one of the first to have the idea for the garden.

LVMWD Board President Andy Coradeschi said, “You don’t have to take  big steps to make a big difference.”

The garden was planted by members of the Climate Action Corps, an AmeriCorp Service program,  led by Deanna Armbruster of the Santa Monica Mountains Fund, who gave them credit for “doing the heavy lifting.”

The fund offers free and low-cost native plant education to all of Southern California through workshops, classes and conferences and provides free plants and seeds to local underserved groups, including local tribes, community gardens, land trusts, and others.

Calabasas Mayor James Bozajian said that the Bark Park, 27 years old already, was built in cooperation with LVMWD and the Malibu Foundation.

Adrienne Burns,  Director of External Affairs for LVMWD, brought her own dog to celebrate the new extension of the Bark Park.

The Butterfly Garden is open to the public and is located at the front of the Bark Park at  4232 Las Virgenes Road.
