Rabbi Daniel Cotzin Burg has joined Hamakom in West Hills as its new Senior Rabbi, succeeding longtime spiri-tual leaders Rabbi Richard Camras and Rabbi Stewart Vogel.
Burg comes to the West Valley after 16 years leading Beth Am Synagogue in Baltimore, where he became known for community engagement and bringing together people with different backgrounds and perspectives.
His move also marks a return to Los Angeles. Burg attended rabbinical school at American Jewish University and met his wife, Rabbi Miriam Cotzin Burg, while both were studying here more than two decades ago.
At Hamakom, Burg takes the helm of a congregation formed in 2023 through the merger of Temple Aliyah and Shomrei Torah Synagogue. He sees the congregation’s diversity of backgrounds, observance and viewpoints—and the energy and engagement of its members—as a foundation for building an inclusive and vibrant Jewish community for the 21st century, rooted in connection, learning and shared purpose.
On September 11, Burg will lead his first High Holy Days at Hamakom, alongside Cantor and Music Director Jenni Asher and the congregation’s clergy team.
