  • by

The City of Calabasas has won a 2025 Risk Management Award from the California Joint Powers Insurance Authority (California JPIA) for Best Overall Performance in the Workers’ Compensation Program for municipal agencies without public safety exposure. More than 77 public agency peers recognized the City.

The Risk Management Awards highlight the dedicated efforts and achievements of California JPIA members that have demonstrated excellence and effective leadership in the Liability and Workers’  Compensation Programs. California JPIA staff evaluated various indicators that reflect an organization’s risk management efforts, including:

– Overall claims performance

-Improvement in claims performance over time

– Responsiveness to LossCAP (Loss Control Action Plan) recommendations

-Members’ engagement with risk management

-Participation in risk management programs

-Attendance at training and academy opportunities

The recognition reflects Calabasas’ proactive risk management practices including the early intervention, ongoing employee training, streamlined reporting processes and a commitment to fostering a culture of safety and accountability.

“This award is a reflection of the care and professionalism our team brings to their work every day,” said City Manager Kindon Meik. “We take pride in building a workplace culture that values safety, accountability and continuous improvement—not just as policies, but as part of who we are as a City.”

“The Risk Management Awards demonstrate the power of strong governance and leadership,” said California JPIA Chief Executive Officer Alexander Smith. “I am honored to celebrate this year’s award recipients. Their commitment to excellence in risk management sets a standard for our entire membership and for public agencies throughout the state.”

The award winners were honored at the California Joint Power’s  Authority Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the California JPIA campus in La Palma.
