As the recovery effort for the recent fires moves forward, the City Council shares the concern of residents regarding fire debris that may be transported to the Calabasas Landfill. Supervisor Horvath’s Office provided the following information: “The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently conducting Phase 1 of the fire debris cleanup which will remove household hazardous materials from the burned areas. These materials will be stored at a staging location at the intersection of PCH and Topanga Canyon Blvd. These materials will not go to Calabasas landfill. They will be properly stored and transported to a disposal site out of the state. Phase 2 will be conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineer, which will remove fire debris. This will not include any hazardous materials from Phase 1.” I want to assure you that our staff and City Council have been actively engaging with the decision makers including Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles Sanitation District, the South Coast Air Quality Management District, and the Los Angeles Regional Quality Control Board. We will continue to advocate for our community and insist that hazardous materials are not permitted in the Calabasas Landfill. We will provide additional information as it becomes available.
