Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order this Thursday for the removal of homeless encampments within the state. While the order is clear that the removal of encampments remains in the discretion of local authorities, it also calls on state officials “to adopt humane and dignified policies to urgently address encampments on state property.” Newsom’s order would direct the state on how to properly remove tents and makeshift shelters that clutter large portions of the city. “This executive order directs state agencies to move urgently to address dangerous encampments while supporting and assisting the individuals living in them — and provides guidance for cities and counties to do the same,” Newson said in a statement. “There are simply no more excuses. It’s time for everyone to do their part.” This directive follows a recent Supreme Court ruling that declared “anti-camping” ordinances do not violate the Constitution’s ban on “cruel and unusual” punishment.
