For those that have had to quickly evacuate their homes, it is a time when panic is at an all-time high and certain items can be easily forgotten in the rush to escape. For some, that includes crucial medications and health equipment.
Due to the fires, California health officials have ordered that all insurance providers suspend prescription refill limits and any out-of-network restrictions.
First, officials suggest going to the nearest pharmacy to replace needed medications. If an individual typically gets their prescriptions from a chain pharmacy like CVS, they can go to any other branch to request a refill. If you have evacuated to a location without a branch of your typical pharmacy, you can go to a local one and request your prescription be transferred. There will be no additional cost and the medication fee will be what one would have paid at an in-network pharmacy.
If, however, you cannot reach your pharmacy or doctor, California is allowing pharmacists to dispense a “reasonable amount” of medication without a prescription at their discretion to see patients through until they can get a regular supply.
The state also mandated that insurance companies replace medical equipment for those that have been displaced or lost their homes. All healthcare outlets are currently required to have a toll-free number that patients can call to assist fire disaster victims in replacing their medical equipment.
