Valley Councilmembers Propose Limits on Van Nuys Airport

  • by

Los Angeles City Councilmember Imelda Padilla, newly elected to the council, has made one of her first motions to challenge increased traffic from Van Nuys Airport over valley homes.  She has introduced two motions, supported by Councilmember Nithya Raman. The first motion, 23-1339, proposes the airport develop a specific plan, and that a moratorium on aviation development is halted until that plan is created and approved. The second motion addresses the current Van Nuys VNY Vision Study and proposes enacting restrictions on the numbers and times of airline flights in and out of the airport. Currently Van Nuys Airport is a public airport operated by Los  Angeles World Airports (LAWA) which also operates LAX. There is no commercial service at the airport; it serves primarily private jets, however Van Nuys is home to news, medical transport, and tour helicopter operators, the air operations unit of the Los Angeles City Fire Department, and a maintenance base for Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power helicopters.
