All the press coverage and written materials about the Phase II debris removal from the Palisades Fire continually refer to it as “free.” In reality, the County of Los Angeles will bill a resident’s insurance policy for the work done by the Army Corps of Engineers. This payment will not be taken from rebuild coverage. According to a representative from Supervisor Lindsey Horvath’s office, the County has contracted with the Army Corps and monies collected will be passed to them. “The County will not profit from this,” they stressed, also adding, “I’ve been trying to get ‘free’ removed from all the coverage.” If a resident does not have debris removal coverage through insurance, there will be no charge. Residents can also opt to do the removal at their own expense.
