Topanga Canyon Blvd. Opens for All Traffic

  • by

After months of round-the-clock work, Cal Trans reopened Topanga Canyon Boulevard on June 2.

The main road linking the valley to the beach had been closed from Grand View in the canyon to Pacific Coast Highway since March 9, when a series of heavy storms created a massive landslide. Initial estimates said 5,500 truckloads of dirt and debris would have to be removed, closing the road through September, but the land movement was found not to be as deep as calculated. Only approximately 700 truckloads hauled away mud.

The road is a major commuter link from the valley to Malibu, and detours to other canyon roads such as Las Flores, Tuna Canyon and Malibu Canyon meant more vehicle trips on roads not designed for major traffic and thus lengthy delays.

The closure was also a hardship for businesses in Topanga Canyon, as access was restricted for almost three months and anticipated to run through the busy summer season. However, beginning July 1, small business owners in the area can apply for grants up to $10,000, offered as part of Los Angeles County’s new business interruption fund.
