Soraya Kicks Off “Jazz at the Naz

  • by

The Soraya’s 2022 season of Jazz at Naz was so successful they have made it permanent. The 2023 season of all jazz greats kicks off February 2 with Christian McBride’s “A Movement Revisited,” celebrating heroes of the Civil Rights movement during Black History Month.

McBride studied classical music at Julliard, then was recruited to the road by saxophonist Bobby Watson. He formed the Christian McBride Band in 2000, and was praised as “one of the most intoxicating, least-predictable bands on the scene today.” McBride is also a respected educator and advocate and has combined roles, composing “The Movement, Revisited,” a four-movement suite dedicated to Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and Dr. Martin Luther King. The piece was commissioned by the Portland Arts Society and the National Endowment for the Arts.

He will perform the piece in the “Jazz Club” at The Soraya, located on stage, with table seating and exclusive access to food and drinks. It’s their 21st century version of a speakeasy right in the Valley!

Single tickets are available or there is a discounted Jazz Pass for all five Jazz at Naz concerts, including   McBride, Vince Giordano & The Nighthawks on February 4, the Melissa Aldana Quartet on February 8, Joel Ross’ Parables on February 10 and The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on February 11.

The Soraya is located at 18111 Nordhoff Street, on the campus of CSUN. For tickets call (818) 677-8800 or visit thesoraya.org.
