The Dawoodi Bohra community of Los Angeles hosted its annual Ramadan Iftar on March 5, welcoming 65 distinguished guests, including diplomats, interfaith leaders, law enforcement officials, neighbors and community representatives.
The evening highlighted the spirit of Ramadan while honoring local firefighters and first responders and supporting charitable initiatives.
Held at the community center in Woodland Hills, the event emphasized gratitude, service, and renewal. Guests participated in the traditional breaking of the fast and enjoyed a Bohra meal, fostering connections across diverse backgrounds.
The evening opened with a recitation from the Holy Quran and the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a special message from His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the leader of the Dawoodi Bohra community.
Adnan Hamid, a local community representative, welcomed guests and reflected on the shared values of service and unity. “Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, and charity—areminder to serve others with humility and compassion. This aligns with the dedication ofour firefighters and first responders, who work tirelessly to protect lives,” he said.
LAFD Chief Michael Flynn expressed his appreciation: “Ramadan Mubarak to all observing this sacred month. On behalf of the Los Angeles Fire Department, we appreciate this opportunity to come together in reflection and unity. Service, generosity, and commitment to others are values we all share, and they guide the work of our firefighters every day.”
Aliasger Najam, Outreach Director for the Dawoodi Bohras of the United States, spoke on the theme of renewal: “Ramadan offers a moment for reflection and renewal. Nature itself teaches us about resilience and growth. We’re grateful for the firefighters who constantly
renew their efforts to protect our communities.”
LAPD Commander John Shah emphasised the importance of community: “Iftar is not just a meal; it is a moment of reflection, gratitude, and unity. It brings people together, regardless of background, to embrace values of understanding and compassion. At our core, we all share the same values—family, respect, and a commitment to making our communities stronger. Your traditions and dedication to unity inspire us all.”
As part of the evening’s commitment to service and the Dawoodi Bohra philanthropic initiative Project Rise, attendees assembled 100 Inside Safe Kits containing essential hygiene items such as soap, toothpaste, deodorant, and socks. These kits will be donated to the Mayor’s Office to support individuals experiencing homelessness.
Reflecting on the evening, Los Angeles Fire Department Bureau Commander Jamie Moore shared, “I walk away from this event with a full heart. The common words I heard tonight—peace, renewal, commitment. And most importantly—‘community.’ It is this sense of community that will help Los Angeles recover and flourish.”
