Pacific Lodge: 100 Years of Helping Youth

  • by

Pacific Lodge is celebrating 100 years of helping local youth.

The lodge itself is spread out over 42 acres south of the boulevard in Woodland Hills.

It has grown from its initial roots back in 1923 when it was founded by the Protestant Welfare Association of Los Angeles County as the Pacific Lodge Boys’ Home in Spadra, California, near modern-day Pomona.

It was initially established to provide a home for troubled boys aged 12 to 16 who had encountered the juvenile court system. The institution aimed to help them rebuild their lives.

In 1927, a significant development occurred when Milo Bekins of the Bekins Moving & Storage family generously deeded the property in Girard (now known as Woodland Hills) to Pacific Lodge.

This relocation marked a turning point for the organization. The name was officially changed to Pacific Lodge Boys’ Home in 1942, and it no longer had a religious affiliation.

By 1950, it had gained 501(c)(3) status, solidifying its commitment to its mission.

Over the years, Pacific Lodge continued to evolve in response to the changing needs of Los Angeles County. In 1993, the organization’s name was changed to Pacific Lodge Youth Services to better reflect the diverse programs offered to youth, both male and female, in and at-risk of the juvenile justice and foster care systems.

As Pacific Lodge proudly commemorates its 100-year anniversary, the organization reflects on its rich history and the transformative impact it has made on countless lives.

In 2016, a significant milestone was reached when Pacific Lodge merged with Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services, expanding its scope and influence. The Woodland Hills campus transformed into a dynamic hub, extending its residential services to teenage girls and providing wraparound and mental health services to the community.

Today, Pacific Lodge remains a vital part of its community, adapting to the needs of the times.

The institution now also offers housing for young adults attending nearby L.A. community colleges, exemplifying its dedication to building bright futures. As Pacific Lodge looks ahead to the next 100 years, its legacy reflects a steadfast commitment to wellness, education, relationships and career development — a beacon of hope and optimism for the individuals under its care.
