Marmalade Cafe Files for Chapter 11

Marmalade Cafe Files for Chapter 11

Marmalade Cafe, which closed its Commons at Calabasas restaurant in July, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, detailing assets and liabilities between $1 million and $10 million. The chain was started in 1990 by Bobby Burns, Bonnie Burns and Selwyn Yosslowitz. The Burns siblings were the children of Elizabeth Burns, who ran the Bob Burns restaurants, including the one at The Promenade in Woodland Hills. After the mall closed that restaurant down, Bobby opened Brentwood Bar & Grill, and then went on to found the Marmalade chain. The brand received investment in 2007 from Parallel Investment Partners for expansion outside California, but that plan never happened. The COVID-19 epidemic forced the closing of two outlets, and then two more this year.  The Calabasas restaurant closed with a statement saying, “Despite our best efforts to weather these challenges, and after seeking rent relief from our landlord during this extended construction period, the landlord declined to help. With construction expected to continue for an extended period, we simply cannot sustain the financial losses any longer.”
