The Leonis Adobe Museum celebrated a 60 year anniversary on September 26.
The museum was dedicated as Los Angeles’ Historical Cutural Monument #1, and has been open to the public for 60 years.
Leonis Adobe is a living history museum dedicated to preserving and sharing 1880s ranch life and promoting the history of early California through education and community outreach. Thousands of school children visit it each year, and the grounds, original house and animals are a big draw.
The anniversary celebration honored former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa with the Leonis Legacy Award. Villaraigosa has been very involved with the museum and voiced an introduction to their film.
Principal City Planner for Los Angeles City Planning Ken Bernstein was given the Leonis Preservation Award, for his work on preserving so many of L.A.’s historic structures – detailed in his book, Preserving Los Angeles: How Historic Places Can Transform America’s Cities.
The Leonis Family Foundation, which was represented by Miguel Leonis’ great, great, great niece, Susan Leonis-Jensen, was given the Education Legacy Award.
