Jazz Legend Herb Alpert Kicks Off Jazz at Naz

  • by

Renown jazz artist Herb Alpert will headline the upcoming season of Jazz and Naz at the Soraya in Northridge.

Fast to be recognized as one of the best winter jazz festivals on the west coast, the third annual Jazz at Naz Festival features a star-studded lineup of the finest musicians in both The Soraya’s Great Hall and its innovative, intimate Jazz Club – a unique setting for jazz performances hosted directly on The Soraya’s stage.

Whether you’re a hard-core jazz aficionado or simply looking for a fun night out, Jazz at Naz offers a wide breadth of performers this season – from Booker T. Jones and Hammond Organ prodigy Matthew Whitaker “60 Years of Green Onions” to Delfeayo Marsalis’ New Orleans Jazz, and the poignant rhythms of Cuba with Eliades Ochoa and special guest Harold López-Nussa.

The third-annual Jazz at Naz Festival will continue The Soraya’s tradition of livestreaming concerts, expanding availability for audiences around the world and creating a unique “watch it again” opportunity for all festival attendees post-concert.

The 2022-23 Season’s Jazz at Naz had more than 4,580 people and was watched for 3,727 hours.

Executive and Artistic Director Thor Steingraber and accomplished jazz musician and educator Reggie Quinerly will return as hosts of the 13-camera digital stream – featuring exclusive backstage content and candid interviews with the artists.

“CSUN has been for decades an important training ground for jazz musicians,” said Steingraber. “When The Soraya opened in 2011, the commitment to jazz in Northridge grew further. Now, with the addition of the second Jazz at Naz Festival, we can safely say that Northridge is an epicenter for jazz in Southern California.”

The Soraya’s 2023-24 Jazz at Naz Festival includes:

Saturday,  January 27, 8 pm: A Golden Anniversary with Herb Alpert & Lani Hall. Legendary Tijuana Brass founder and trumpeter combines work and home life in this jazzy return to The Soraya stage. Celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary, Alpert’s signature brass dances with the airy and sensual voice of Hall proving that even after half a century the sparks still fly.

Wednesday, January 31, 8 pm, and Thursday February 1,  8 pm: Ranky Tanky with very special guest Ms. Lisa Fischer.

Friday, February 2,  8 pm and Saturday, Feb 3,  8 pm: Booker T. Jones and The Hammond B-3 with special guest Matthew Whitaker.

Wednesday, February 7,  8 pm: Delfeayo Marsalis and the Uptown Jazz Orchestra.

Saturday, February 10, 8 pm: Eliades Ochoa with special guest Harold López-Nussa
