Weddings, bar mitzvahs, birthdays, awards – the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City hosted them all since the 1880’s. The Los Angeles City Council approved plans on Wednesday for a mixed-use project at the current site of the hotel. Plans are to demolish the historic building for a 520-unit residential complex and mixed-used development. Proponents argued for the prospect of more affordable living, while opponents argued that the development would erase a piece of history. Of the 520 units, 78 will be used for low-income tenants. The plans also include 46,000 square feet of commercial space and a bike and pedestrian path along the LA River.
