Hank Goldberg started out in a “shack” in Studio City in 1953, selling tires loaned to him by his brother-in-law.
“He was open seven days a week, 12 hours a day,” said his son Steve. Hank then moved to a small shed in Encino, across from the Queen’s Arms restaurant, where he offered only 50 to 100 tires. “It was so easy then as there were only a half dozen tire sizes,” said Steve.
A few moves later and Hank’s moved to its current location at 19951 Ventura Blvd. near Winnetka, which used to be a Unocal station.
Hank’s Tires now has 26 employees and offers tires, full auto repair and mechanics. They are an AAA-approved auto repair shop.
Hank’s is now run by Steve Goldberg, who graduated El Camino High School and attended Pierce College and San Diego State before taking over the shop in 1977. “It’s the only job I’ve ever had!” he told Valley News Group.
Today Goldberg supports the local community by donating to local churches and synagogues.
For the 70th anniversary Goldberg is running specials next Tuesday through Sunday, including purchase four tires and get a free $125 alignment. There will also be a raffle drawing for free t-shirts, a bbq, gifts and the grand prize of an electric bike. For more information call (818) 340-4200.
