Golden Globes: And the Winner Is…

  • by

By Katie Sterling

It’s the first award show to kick off the season and typically a foreshadowing of who is most likely to win their respective categories with the holy grail of all golden statues, the Oscars. After not airing last year, the Golden Globes got glitzy on a Tuesday to honor the best in both film and television. What a show it was…

While typically the “rowdiest” of the awards shows, this year’s ceremony began with a bit of a solemn monologue by host Jerrod Carmichael who focused on the blatant controversy surrounding the Golden Globes. It’s no secret that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has had its fair share of scandal in recent years due to the lack of diversity in their association and their seemingly blatant nominations of strictly white-led casts. Tom Cruise has famously returned his three Golden Globes due to the controversy and Brendan Fraser (who was nominated for The Whale this year) stated he wouldn’t attend the ceremony. It’s an important discussion that absolutely needs to happen but unfortunately, set off quite an interesting tone to start the celebratory event.

Nevertheless, thanks to the nature of the presenters and recipients, plus the unofficial memo that everyone had to seemingly wear glitter, there ended up being a bit of sparkle to the evening after all. From the emotional acceptance speeches (Ke Huy Quan) to the kooky (Jennifer Coolidge), this year’s Golden Globes weren’t amazing as a whole, but managed to craft moments that got everyone talking.

Without further ado, the winners…
