From Pancakes to Preschool – Old Denny’s Under Construction

  • by

The old Denny’s at 20137 Ventura Blvd., (just west of Winnetka) is undergoing a complete transformation.

The iconic diner was bought by L.A. County in 2022 as part of their purchase of the old 818 Hotel at the site.

The property was turned over to Hope the Mission to  run as a shelter for families with children.

The 100-room hotel was converted into mini-apartments, and Hope the Mission founder and CEO Ken Craft promised it would offer housing, three meals a day and job training for those sheltering there.

As part of the services offered to those housed at the new shelter now called The Woodlands, the shuttered restaurant adjacent to the site was always planned to be a child care center for mothers who live on the property, so they could transform their lives by getting jobs and moving out of poverty and homelessness.

The restaurant is now being redeveloped into a pre-school.

Craft said, “It may not look like much now, but the former Denny’s restaurant across from Taft High School is being converted into a preschool for the moms who live on site. At Hope the Mission, we create holistic solutions to help people overcome poverty and adversity and get back on their feet!”
