El Camino Students Walk Out Over Antisemitism

  • by

Students staged a walk out Tuesday at El Camino Charter High School over alleged antisemitic incidents.  Many carried Israeli flags and chanted “Stop the hate” or “Stand Against Antisemitism.” What sparked the protest was one student being called a “dirty Jew” and being punched in the neck and back. The girl said her teacher was on the phone and didn’t realize what was happening until she left the classroom crying. The school’s Executive Director David Hussey said the school does stress an anti-hate message to students. “One is addressing the issues, maybe some students don’t know what they’re saying and what the impacts are. So it’s educating these students, and then reassuring the other students that they’re safe at school,” he told reporters. The victim’s father said that the school is not calling the incident a hate crime and that instead of taking disciplinary action against his daughter’s alleged attacker they moved him to a different seat. “The school thinks that he has more rights than my daughter for protection. He has rights to be educated, but my daughter doesn’t have the rights for her safety,” said Edan Eshee.
