David Labkovski Project DLP celebrated its 10th anniversary in March.
The David Labkovski Project’s mission is documenting history through art. Founder and Executive Director Leora Raikin wants to educate students through the works of Lithuanian-Israeli artist David Labkovski (1906-1991). As an educator, artist, and author, Raikin teaches students about the Holocaust and Jewish life in Eastern Europe by engaging viewers with his paintings and sketches. The David Labkovski Project shares lessons of life, survival, tolerance, acceptance, and the importance of bearing witness to history.
Honored at the event for their contributions to DLP were Jill Harmatz Sanders, Political Chair for AIPAC in the Conejo/West Valley area, Scott Schmerelson, Board President, Los Angeles Unified School District Board District 3 and Dr. Jane Willoughby, Chair of DLP San Diego Chapter.
The Ellie Lainer Youth Leadership in Holocaust Education Awards were bestowed on students who have worked tirelessly to engage their peers and communities about the dangers of antisemitism and the importance of bearing witness to history through the David Labkovski Project. Awards were given to Evelyn Gelman, Oak Park High School, Gabby Paul, Oak Park High School, Maya Schwarz, Cleveland Humanities Magnet and Lana Shargani, Palisades Charter High School.
