CalTrans Announces 101 Freeway Closures

  • by

Caltrans plans to begin overnight closures of all lanes on the 101 Freeway starting in mid- to late April in Agoura Hills for continuing construction on the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Bridge.

Highway 101 will be closed between Liberty Canyon Road and Chesebro Road beginning at 11:59 pm Monday through Friday. All lanes will be closed in only one direction each night. Lanes in the opposite direction will stay open for traffic. Lanes will open by 5 am the next morning except Saturdays, when lanes may open later.

Caltrans will provide a convenient detour on local streets. To avoid delays on the street detour, freeway travelers can bypass the work zone by staying on an all-freeway detour using State Routes 23 and 118 and Interstate 405.

The overnight closures will enable crews to safely lift and place 82 large concrete beams, called girders, above the freeway lanes. Each girder weighs between 126 tons and 140 tons. Each girder reaches from the center median to the shoulder of the freeway. The girder operation is expected to be completed in approximately four to six weeks. Completion of the entire crossing is expected around the end of 2025 or early 2026. Construction began in 2022.

The starting date and the schedule each night are subject to change due to weather and operational reasons. Some lanes may be closed starting as early as 7 pm. Caltrans urges motorists to watch for announcements soon about the starting date and the direction of the closure each night.

Caltrans will provide additional information soon for the public, including updates on the social-media platform X, formerly Twitter, at @CaltransDist7. Those without an X/Twitter account can view all the information at Information also is available at the Caltrans web site and at The public can sign up for free weekly email updates about the wildlife crossing’s construction and closures by sending an email to or or calling (213) 897-9372.
