Michael Owens, District Director for Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, passed away Sunday following a brief illness. Owens joined Blumenfield’s State Assembly staff over 13 years ago.
“The past few weeks have been incredibly difficult for Michael’s family, friends and all of Team Blumenfield,” said Councilmember Blumenfield. “We lost one of the most empathetic, caring and funny people we knew. We simply loved him.”
Owens was responsible for district operations and he put his passions to work. Leading efforts to help those with developmental disabilities, bring more film production to the West Valley, and fighting for and protecting LGBTQ rights, he was a true champion for marginalized Angelenos.
During the COVID-19 emergency and the Woolsey Fire, Owens worked closely with local senior organizations and groups assisting folks with disabilities to make sure they were safe and had every resource they needed. Previously he worked as Director of Legal Affairs at the Motion Picture Association. In 2017 Michael was the Valley Cultural Foundation’s Dancing with the Valley Stars Champion.
Blumenfield said, “While plans for a memorial are underway, I hope you all can join me in remembering Michael and think about his family during this difficult time.”
