Catalina Yachts to Become a Movie Studio?

  • by

The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety has received an Application for Building Permit and Certificate of Occupancy for the old Catalina Yachts property.

The property is located at 21200 Victory Blvd., Woodland Hills, between Canoga Avenue and Variel. For years it was the headquarters and manufacturing facility for the company’s fiberglass sailboats.

The two-story, 187,000-square-foot building sits on 9.3 acres. It was purchased in 1974 by Frank Butler for his Catalina Yachts headquarters, which has since been moved to Florida. It was sold by the Butler Family Trust in 2022 for $61 million to Chicago-based private equity firm Walton Street Capital.

The application asks for alteration and change of use of existing manufacturing building to television and motion picture studio including increased building height from 32.5 feet to 49.5 feet over a stage area.

Buyers of the property were reported to be Cinema Chicago Rockwell LLC, that owns a movie studio in Chicago, and Cinema Wilmington LLC, that operates three movie studios in North Carolina.
